I read today the first time about Helen Thomas. She died in the age of 92 years and did sit for decades in the white house press room -in the first row.
Presidents knew her by name, and Obama brought muffins into the press room for her birthday. She was an institution, not only for the fact of being around for a long time, also for asking difficult questions bringing all presidents at some point into a bit of a trouble.
She lost her job when she made comments about Israel’s settling policy. As per usual with critical statements about Israel / jews they are always tested against antisemitic scent. In doubt the words will be taken as antisemitic and the person uttering them will lose his / her job and disappear from public.
Unfortunately this holds true in almost every case I know of. Helen Thomas correctly states that we and this includes Germany as well as the USA, do not have freedom of speech when it comes to Israel / Jews.
